Tarpon Springs, Florida

Site description

The Treasure Coast Regional Planning Commission is the economic redevelopment vehicle for four counties in southeast Florida. The Commission estimates there are over 1300 brownfield sites in the region, with some being in Enterprise Zones and other low-income areas. TAB is providing on-going assistance with Requests for Proposals from contractors to conduct environmental site assessments on several properties in the region. Currently, the Commission anticipates seven applications in response to the RFP, eventually narrowing the field to three firms.

Summary of TAB assistance

A TAB representative traveled to Treasure Coast on March 10, 2005, to participate in the Martin County Workshop on Brownfield Redevelopment Basics as a panelist, and give a presentation on federal laws and resources available to assist with the redevelopment of brownfield properties. TAB also developed a one-page handout on Brownfield Basics for workshop attendees. During the trip to the Treasure Coast, TAB was able to tour brownfield areas, and had an opportunity to meet with the director of the North Renaissance Community Development Corporation and tour the area that the CDC is buying to redevelop into a grocery store and pedestrian mall. TAB continues to offer assistance as needed to the Council.
