Treme Neighborhood
New Orleans, Louisiana

Site description

The Treme community is located in the downtown area outside of the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana. Treme is the oldest African-American neighborhood in the United States and was the site of significant economic, cultural, political, social and legal events that have shaped Black America. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, and early in the city's history was the main neighborhood of free people of color.

Summary of assistance (through July, 2006)

TAB is working with the University of Georgia's Fanning Institute to assist Moultrie, GA, with their brownfield redevelopment efforts. The City is focusing its efforts on redeveloping the northern corridor into the city, and will address several brownfield sites, including a former meat-packing plant site, several gas stations, and a junkyard.

TAB participated in a redevelopment kick-off meeting with city officials and interested parties in November 2006, in which participants were asked to provide their input on a vision for the corridor and a redeveloped downtown business district. TAB researched previous studies on Moultrie's redevelopment, and submitted a report to the City on these reports and Phase and Phase II environmental site assessments that had been completed in 1997.
