Site description
The Marzone Inc./Chevron Chemical Company OU#2 site is located in south-central
Georgia in the city of Tifton. Marzone OU#2 site encompasses approximately 9.1
acres and includes a concrete slab formerly serving as the foundation for a
warehouse where pesticides were stored. The site consists of surface soil,
sediment, and groundwater contamination present at the south end of the property.
Potential chemicals of concern for surface soil/sediments are DDT, DDE, DDD,
toxaphene, chlordane, copper, lead, and zinc. The estimated maximum depth of
contamination over this area is approximately 1 foot. Potential chemicals of
concern for groundwater are inorganics (beryllium, cadmium, nickel, lead,
aluminum, manganese, iron, nitrate/nitrite) and organics (BHC, Endrin, Dinoseb).
EPA undertook some removal action on OU#2 in the early 1990s, primarily surface
soil and drums. Future plans call for removal of the contaminated soil/sediments
and hotspot removal in the wetlands area, with the intent being no disturbance of hardwoods. Groundwater will be monitored over the next 5 years to determine rates of natural attenuation, since contaminant levels do not exceed levels of concern by significant amounts. Groundwater is believed to be contaminated as a result of activity on neighboring property, although Dinoseb contamination is believed to be the result of dumping of the contaminant north of the site. No wells in the area are affected, nor are any residential properties.
