Destrehan, Louisiana

Site description

Destrehan, a small community just outside New Orleans contacted TOSC in June 2000 seeking assistance with potential environmental impacts of a proposed expansion of grain elevator operations in the neighborhood. The community has three grain elevators in close proximity to approximately 4 subdivisions in the area.

Summary of assistance

On June 22, 2000, TOSC staff from LSU attended a community meeting to hear the various concerns of the community in relation to the grain elevators and possible expansion of the existing facilities. TOSC discussed the technical assistance program with the community and how the program could benefit their community. The community is seeking information on various issues, such as air quality and constituents of concern, and would like some specific answers to questions as well as some general information about grain elevators. TOSC has provided the community with a copy of the report "Movement of Chemicals in the Industrial Corridor: A Community-Focused Summary," for general information on some of the issues of concern to the community.
