Characterize Contaminated Sediments

The two main requirements for successful capping are that it isolate the contaminants and maintain the chemical seal over the long term. The first task for reaching these objectives is site assessment. First, characterize the contaminated sediment by measuring the following parameters:

  • Level of contamination
  • Grain size distribution
  • Shear strength
  • Resistance to erosion
  • Consolidation
  • Plasticity
  • Density
