The Anacostia is one of America's most endangered rivers, with sediments containing significant concentrations of heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hydrocarbons, and chlordane. Likely sources of these contaminants are long-term military and industrial activity in the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers.

The demonstration will make use of two study areas on the Anacostia adjacent to the Navy Yard:

Site 1
This old CSO on the south end of the Navy Yard has 6-12 parts per million (ppm) of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 30 ppm of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Metals on site include:

  • Cadmium: 3-6 ppm
  • Chromium: 120-155 ppm
  • Copper: 127-207 ppm
  • Lead: 351-409 ppm
  • Mercury: 1.2-1.4 ppm
  • Zinc: 512-587 ppm

Site 2
This site is near an old manufactured gas site on the north end of the Navy yard. It has PAHs up to 210 ppm.
