Preliminary Efforts

  • Bulk sediment sampling conducted April 19 at both locations.
  • Sediments being analyzed to determine the physical characteristics and type of contaminants present.
  • Sediments distributed to cooperating organizations evaluating particular cap technologies.

Project Activities: January-June 2002

  • Receive phase-one funds ($2.25 million).
  • Define tentative technologies for demonstration.
  • Negotiate and process laboratory testing subcontracts.
  • Initiate laboratory "treatability" tests:
    • Demonstrate that proposed technologies have positive effects and limited negative impacts under water and sediment conditions of the Anacostia River.
    • Plan for studies to be parallel with field work to identify metrics for evaluation of field effectiveness and improve process understanding.
  • Negotiate and process prime field contracting agreement.

Project Plans: June-December 2002

  • Develop a site characterization work plan.
  • Distribute a work plan for review and comment.
  • Initiate site characterization.
  • Report preliminary conclusions on lab treatability studies.
  • Develop a preliminary field construction design.
  • Coordinate with cooperating sources of support (EPA SITE program third party evaluation and Department of Defense Environmental Security Technology Certification Program).
